Social media is constantly changing and I know it can be hard to keep up.

As a professional social media manager, it’s my job to keep on top of those changes so that I can support businesses like yours.

Over time, I’ve noticed the same questions crop up time and time again – which is why I put the answers all in one place for you.

1. Which platform should I be on?
The simple answer is, you should be on the platform your customers are on!

This all comes down to knowing and understanding your ideal customer or client. A travel company, for example, would be best to focus on Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok as these are the platforms travellers go to for inspiration.

However a local builder would be better focussing on Facebook where they can be quickly tagged in local groups when someone is asking for recommendations.

2. Do I need to be on every platform?
No. There was a time when most businesses had a presence on every platform, but this really isn’t necessary.

It’s better to take a strategic approach and focus your efforts on one or two platforms rather than spreading yourself too thin.

 

3. Why doesn’t anyone see my posts?
Now this really is the million dollar question!

There are so many reasons your content might not be getting great reach. Here are some possible reasons:
● Your content isn’t great (sorry!)
● You’re not engaging with your followers
● You don’t post consistently
● The platform you are using is prioritising a different type of content
● The time of year – summer is often slower
● You’re not using relevant hashtags

 

4. How do I get people to comment on my posts?
The key to getting lots of comments on your posts is to create content that people feel compelled to respond to.

How do you do that?

Well, the easiest way is to ask questions. For a quick win, avoid open-ended questions that involve too much thought. Instead, ask specific questions which don’t require too much time or brain power.

Here are some ideas:
● People like to talk about themselves, so ask them to share memories. For example, you might ask, ‘What’s your favourite nail colour?’ or ‘Are you a balayage or highlights lover?’
● Try ‘this or that’ questions relevant to your business e.g. ‘Our new autumn colour range is out now. Which do you prefer, this colour or that?’
● Ask people what they need help with. For example, ‘What do you struggle with when it comes to your skin?’

 

5. How much time should I spend on social media every day?
This is entirely up to you, but it’s a good idea to spend at least 15-20 minutes on your business platforms a day.

✅ DO Be purposeful with your time and use it wisely. Answer DMs, respond to comments and follow relevant hashtags for inspiration.
🚫 DON’T Waste your time scrolling endlessly and comparing yourself to others.

 

6. What should I post on social media?
This will depend on the type of business you run and the type of content your customers want to see from you.

Remember, the most important thing is to create content that inspires your customers to like, share, save and comment on.

For example:

  • High quality images of nails/hair or treatments
  • Ask your followers a question (this or that etc)
  • Promote an offer or service
  • Tell your followers why they should book with you over someone else
  • Share hints & tips for self care after a service

7. How often should I post on social media?
Again, this comes down to how much time you can commit to social media.

The more often you post, the more people will see your content and the faster your account will grow. BUT. And this is a big BUT, you don’t have to be a slave to social media.

You don’t have to post every day (unless that’s easy for you), two to three times a week is fine – with daily engagement if you can – but if you can only manage one post a week that’s OK too.

The key is consistency. It’s better to post one a week every week than to post every day for a fortnight and then go quiet for a month.

Remember, the majority of customers will check out your social platforms before buying anything from you – so having an active presence is essential. Dead accounts might make them question whether you are still in business.

 

8. Is it too late to get started on social media?

9. Do I really need to make videos?
You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do on social media, but there’s no escaping the fact that video is a huge trend right now.

In 2021 TikTok became the world’s most visited domain, beating Google, Facebook and Microsoft! So you can see the appetite for video is HUGE.

Video has also become the most popular form of content on Instagram since the introduction of Reels.

That said, video is more time consuming and I’m guessing you don’t love the idea of being on camera. The good news is that there are lots of ways to create brilliant videos without showing your face.
